The "Near Me" Playbook: How Local Businesses Win the Map Pack

Think about the last time you needed a plumber, a dentist or a decent coffee in an unfamiliar part of town. You probably typed a few words into your phone, glanced at a map with three pins on it and tapped one. That little box of three results, often called the map pack, decides who gets the call. This playbook explains how to earn a place in it, step by step, without tricks.

How Google chooses who appears

Google weighs three broad things for local results: relevance (does your business match what was searched?), distance (how close are you to the searcher or the area they named?) and prominence (how well known and trusted are you, online and off?). You can't move your shop closer to every customer, but you can make it obvious what you do and build the signals that show you are a real, reputable business.

Claim and complete your Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the single most important asset for local visibility. Treat it like a shop window rather than a form you fill in once.

  • Primary category: pick the most specific one that describes your main service. Add secondary categories only where they are genuinely true.
  • Services and products: list them individually, with short descriptions in the words customers use.
  • Hours: keep regular and holiday hours accurate. Being shown as open when you are closed costs trust quickly.
  • Photos: upload real images of your premises, team and work, and keep adding them over time.
  • Description: explain who you help and how, plainly. Skip the keyword stuffing.

Make your details match everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should be identical on your website, your profile and every directory that lists you. Small inconsistencies, such as an old phone number or "Street" on one site and "St." on another with a different suite number, make it harder for search engines to be confident that all those listings describe the same company. Do an audit once, fix the mismatches and keep a master record so new listings are always entered the same way.

Build a page for each place you serve

If you have several branches, or travel to customers across a few areas, give each one its own page on your website. A strong location page includes the address or service area, the services offered there, directions or parking notes, photos taken locally and answers to the questions people in that area actually ask. Copying one page and swapping the town name is not enough. Each page should be useful on its own.

Turn happy customers into reviews

Reviews influence both rankings and the decision to call. The businesses with healthy review profiles rarely get lucky; they simply ask consistently.

  1. Ask at the moment satisfaction is highest: just after a job is finished or a problem is solved.
  2. Make it effortless with a direct link or QR code to your review form.
  3. Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically.
  4. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for positive ones. It breaks platform policies and can get your profile suspended.

Post like a local

Regular updates on your profile and website show that the business is active. Share finished projects, seasonal offers, new team members or answers to common questions. Content that mentions real neighbourhoods, landmarks and the problems people face in your area tends to be more relevant than generic advice.

Fix the website basics

Your profile links to your website, and Google looks at both. Make sure your site loads quickly on a phone, shows your phone number and address clearly, includes local business schema markup and has a click-to-call button that works. A beautiful profile that leads to a slow, confusing site wastes the click you worked to earn.

Measure calls, not just rankings

Rankings move around depending on where the searcher is standing, so don't obsess over one position. Track the actions that matter: calls from your profile, direction requests, website clicks and form enquiries. Add tracking to your website so you can see which visits came from your listing and which turned into leads.

A simple monthly routine

  • Check your hours, categories and services are still accurate.
  • Add a handful of new photos and at least two posts.
  • Request reviews from recent customers and reply to every new one.
  • Review calls, direction requests and enquiries against last month.
  • Fix any new directory listings that show the wrong details.
